Singapore's water issue; Organize tours that allow the general public to see the NEWater plant

The NEWater plant is a facility in Singapore that treats used water through a high-grade reclamation process. It is purifies using advanced membrane technologies and ultra-violet disinfection and is super cleana and safe to drink. Singapore has very little natural resourced such as land and water. This calls for the need for Singapore to rely on technology to meet the needs of singaporeans. It should be known to the public the existence of this plant and the importance of conserving water.

As can be seen in the diagram above, used water is first collected and treated. It goes through microfilteration where microscopic particles are filtered out. Then reverse osmosis is done where undesirable contaminants are removed. On top of that, the water passes through ultra violet light to ensure that any remaning organisms are eradicated. Chemicals are also added to the water in thois stage to restore its pH balance. After all these processes are done, high grade recycled water is produced.

NEWater is one of the ways that Singapore uses to ensure water security. Currently, NEWater provides for 30% of Singapore’s water needs. This is a very smart move by the Singapore government as it reduces reliance on Malaysia’s water treaty.

It is my proposal that the public be invited to visit the NEWater plant in intervals. Households should be called and invited to view the factory so as to raise awareness on the lengths that Singapore goes to, to be sustainable and use water efficiently. Organized tours can take place where families who agree to participate the the tours get shown around the NEWater plant. Information about singapore’s water issue will be easily passed on to the public through this method. The NEWater plant is very useful to the Singapore public as they should be educated on how technology has advanced in the field of water recycling. Currently the admission is already free however, I think it would be a good idea to formally invite schools and household families to the plant to be sure that each Singaporean is aware of the existence of the plant and is educated on the importance of utilizing water efficiently.

The NEWater plat is the cutting edge example of the use of technology to meet the needs of Sigaporeans. Water is a scarce resource in this country. The public need to know how water is being reclaimed and reused for daily consumption. In these tours there could also be tips and tricks on how to save water being given to the public. This will encourage them to take steps to reduce the level of water they consume. On top of that they will be more conscious and aware that there is a need to save water and that it is not a constant that water will always be available for consumption. Water is a need and it should not be taken for granted that Singapore has an abundance of it because in fact, Singapore does not have sufficient water on its own to supply to Singaporeans. Singapore buys water from its neighbor, Malaysia, and it had been the only way to ensure that the water needs of the people would be met for a long while. However, with innovation, research and development, Singapore has proven to be able to overcome its water limitations to a degree. These facts need to be made clear to the general public to encourage them to be more sustainable in terms of water usage.
